Pop Rocks and Nerds in the Park

“Pop Rocks and Nerds in the Park” was a six-week character-building summer program for children in K-6th grade.  Its goal was to encourage children to be more like Pop Rocks (dynamic, fun, and unique) and Nerds (smart, leaders, and problem solvers). Through participation in the arts, children learned how to bring about positive change in their community.  Activities included drama, dance, art, and a song-writing workshop.  Each session included a bible lesson and snack.
This summer, participants beautified a common area along the Oswego River Canal by planting a perennial garden.  Children tried their hand at creating a mosaic, under the direction of local teacher and artist, Sue Lynch.  They learned to avoid the trap of jealousy through writing and performing their own skits.  Children also built “Green Eyed Monsters” out of vegetables—and ate them afterwards.
The program took place in Phoenix New York’s historic Henley Park.  We gratefully thank Cathy Lee and The Bridge House Brats for their support and participation.
